SEARCHING THE INTERNET

Mr. Beitz' Top 10 Rules for Searching the Internet

1.  Always search for your information using my pre-screened websites when available. Use the Hotlist!

2.  Search for sources of information not just for specific content. This will help you find more useful information later.

3.  If you fail to find the information you are looking for using the Hotlist, use one of the two best known hybrid sites: Google or      Yahoo.

4.  Remember that the order of your words in your search will affect your search results.

5.  Use keywords that have a direct connection with the content for which you are searching. Remember that common words like      how, or, the, and why are not used as part of your search.

6.  Be as specific as you can in your description for what you are looking for, more often than not you will find it.

7.  Use the + and – symbols effectively...specifically use the + symbol when you want to include specific information in your search      in conjunction with other content and use the – symbol when you only want certain content with other specific information left      out of the search.

8.  Use quotation marks when you want to search for an exact phrase match.

9.  Once in a site that contains the information you are looking for, look for a search this site window or link to search for your      specific content within that site only.

10. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try and try again. Don't give up and be prepared to utilize more than 1 search engine.
